Callery Pear.

The terrorist attack at the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001, was one of those significant events that shocked and reshaped the world, and where most people will remember exactly where they were at the time.

Today, many people around the world will be quietly reflecting on the tragedy that occurred in New York City 25 years ago.

But the story of the Callery Pear (Pyrus calleryana) is less well-known but is one of hope and resilience.

Also known as the “Survivor Tree”, it was discovered buried deep in the rubble after about a month .

Almost unbelievably, the shattered and burnt trunk was still alive. It was replanted and nurtured at a nursery in the nearby Bronx, but its chances were slim.

This remarkable tree returned to the site nine years later in December 2010 and now bursts into blossom each spring.

Saplings from the tree have also been shared across the globe.

So, if you ever get the chance to visit Ground Zero make sure you also visit this amazing tree.
